Who are We?

The Richland County Master Gardener Association (RCMGA) is a not-for-profit organization composed of volunteers whose goal is to promote and teach environmentally sound, research-based gardening practices to the citizens of Richland County, and to provide education to our members needed to accomplish our purpose. Our members have completed a Master Gardener program conducted by state extension service. We serve our county through such activities as assisting in the county extension office, giving educational programs to the public, and participating in community projects related to gardening.

Gardening Tips for Spring
  • Harden off seedlings before moving them into full sun
  • Mark bulbs with golf tees or pebbles before they disappear so you do not dig them up unintentionally.
  • Plant caladium bulbs mid-April.
  • Feed newly planted annuals with half-strength fertilizer.
  • Incorporate herbs into your flower beds.
  • Cut oldest canes of multi stemmed bushes (roses, mock orange, spirea, abelia).
  • Prune spring flowering shrubs as their blooms fade.

  • If you have fire ants, great time for broadcasting when you determine they are foraging.
  • Plant summer vegetable seeds or transplants after last frost date (April 4-17).
  • Plant warm season herbs like basil at the end of April.
  • Take soil sample to Clemson Extension Office.
  • Plant summer vegetables when soil temperature reaches 70 degrees.
  • Add mulch around trees and shrubs.
